Creating healthy restaurant programs

By establishing a healthy restaurant program, local governments can support and give incentives to restaurant owners who are willing to offer healthier foods.

Restaurants apply to the program, agree to meet certain standards, and, in exchange, receive benefits, including free publicity and help implementing healthy changes.

ChangeLab Solutions developed this toolkit to describe how to create a strong healthy restaurant program, providing a variety of options and examples that communities can draw upon in establishing their own program.

You can also download our Model Healthy Restaurant Program Agreement. Local governments can use the model agreement to craft their own agreements with restaurants participating in the local healthy restaurant program. The agreement includes the model program standards, incentive ideas, and standard contract language to help ensure a strong partnership between restaurants and government agencies operating healthy restaurant programs.
