Fundamentals of Local Policy Change: How to move from program to policy to improve health equity

Local programs are essential for improving the lives of community members, and transforming a program into policy is the most effective way to ensure its sustainability. This training will help you build the knowledge and skills to navigate the policy change process with confidence and contribute to community-driven solutions.

Advancing local policy change involves a complex range of activities, including researching policy development, advocating for institutional and community-wide adoption, and supporting implementation and evaluation efforts. While the scope of policy work varies by issue and community, the principles of successful policy change are universal. Along the way, the process creates opportunities to form new partnerships, strengthen existing ones, improve community power-sharing, and prioritize equity at every stage.

Join us for Fundamentals of Local Policy Change

Our live virtual trainings are designed to improve your policy and legal skills; build authentic, real-time connections between peers that spark insight and growth; and provide practical resources from seasoned facilitators. You also get access to a one-hour follow-up session with ChangeLab attorneys to help you apply learnings to your work.

This 2-hour training will include:

  • Information on local and institutional policy change mechanisms
  • How to move program success into codified policy
  • Strategies for integrating meaningful community engagement into the policy process
  • Information on the difference between law and policy and when to use them
  • Tools for discerning the types of policies a local jurisdiction holds authority over
  • An overview of regulations distinguishing between lobbying, education, and advocacy
  • A review of key roles for government, non-profit, private sector, and community members
