Moving policy work forward depends on partnerships with shared goals; we cannot create systemic change in a siloed environment. This summer, ChangeLab Solutions, with the support of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has been pushing the boundaries of equitable policymaking by releasing numerous tools and trainings that deepen the ability of local government, community partners, and changemakers to strengthen the public’s health.
As we complete these high-impact projects, many of which are the culmination of years of work, I am inspired by the dedication and tenacity of my colleagues, our collaborators, and our funders in bringing to life these projects that have the power to change systems and break cycles of injustice.
Below I have highlighted some examples of our recent projects, including innovations in housing solutions that support children’s mental health and well-being, as well as analysis to help health departments understand recent trends related to public health authority.
Working together, we can help ensure a healthier future for all the individuals and communities that make up our diverse nation. I invite you to connect with me about these areas of work or share ideas for future projects. Our team at ChangeLab Solutions looks forward to partnering with you!
In appreciation,
Sarah de Guia, JD

Children’s Mental Health & Housing
A growing body of literature affirms the relationship between housing and children’s mental health. By focusing the power of people who are working to address housing, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Tourette syndrome, and children’s mental health issues, we can reduce many of the challenges that prevent children from living in safe, stable, and affordable homes. Our new fact sheet offers evidence-based policy options and action steps.
How Changes in Public Health Authority Affect Prevention of Infectious Diseases
To help state and local health departments understand recent trends related to public health authority, ChangeLab Solutions has developed a fact sheet that describes how public health authority can change over time, including examples of recent changes in response to COVID-19 and how those changes might affect public health work to prevent infectious diseases such as HIV, viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases, and tuberculosis.
Policies to Support Children’s Mental Health
Children’s mental health is an essential component of their overall well-being, affecting how they cope with stress, build relationships, and operate at school and in their broader community. But many families are unable to access timely, effective, and culturally responsive mental health care. Our new suite of resources offers evidence-based strategies to increase workforce, income, school, and housing supports that have been shown to improve children’s mental health and well-being.
Legal Authority to Address Zoonotic Diseases
Our new report examines the legal authorities that can affect preparedness for and response to emerging and zoonotic infectious diseases (EZIDs) in state, territorial, local, and tribal (STLT) jurisdictions. It is critical to analyze and understand the legal authority of all STLT departments — for example, in public health, animal health, agricultural, and environmental sectors — that are responsible for responding to EZIDs.
