SNAP Work Requirements

Proposed changes will harm health & equity

40 million Americans rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Program (SNAP) to get healthy food that they otherwise couldn’t afford. The program helps them navigate the scary pitfalls of income inequality and food insecurity. Senior policy analyst Nessia Berner Wong argues that the version of the 2018 Farm Bill currently in the US House will harm lower income Americans and exacerbate health inequities.

“Efforts to restrict benefits are part of an intensifying attack on social safety net programs; if allowed to go forward, they will further widen the health gap experienced by low-income people, pushing them off the economic ladder and ensuring that they stay at the bottom.”
