Pedestrian Friendly Code Directory
Safety considerations factor heavily into people's decisions about what type of transportation to use. People are less likely to walk in an area where they feel unsafe due to risk of crime or dangerous traffic conditions. Dimly lit streets, secluded public spaces, poorly maintained or narrow sidewalks, and street crossings without appropriate signage all create an unwelcoming and unsafe atmosphere for pedestrians. Safety is increased when public spaces are illuminated and are easily visible from homes, other buildings, and the street. These elements highlight policies that will increase the safety of an area and decrease the risk of injury.
